This course is intended for students who have a serious interest in music, and it is a
necessity for students planning music careers. Students will have an opportunity to develop
an understanding of the fundamentals of music theory through five primary approaches: analyzing,
composing, playing, listening, and singing. Students' creative abilities in music composition
will also be explored and developed. All students will learn to play piano and guitar.
Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
- communicate effectively with other musicians by demonstrating a working knowledge of traditional
music theory and notation
- use music practices effectively to compose pieces
- analyze their own composition and the works of other composers
- master basic theory skills through effective work and study
- develop listening skills to identify intervals and chord qualities
- play piano and guitar at a basic level
