This course is designed to give students an overview of music through the study of three units. Units will include the fundamentals of music, the history of jazz, and the history of rock. Students will prepare and present information to the class regularly. Various artists and groups will be examined, concentrating on the essence of musical styles and the reasons for their popularity. This course will also provide the opportunity for all students to learn to play the guitar.


Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • demonstrate an ability to listen to, categorize, and summarize their understanding of different styles of music through extensive listening


  • analyze and discuss music with an increased overall musical knowledge


  • have an appreciation for all styles of music and a better understanding for why the student likes or dislikes certain genres of music


  • play guitar at a basic level through playing multiple chords, scales, and songs
