LEEANNE R. PORTA
General Music Bryantville
I grew up in Brockton, about 45 minutes from Pembroke. When I turned 7, I started piano lessons. I went through the Brockton Public Schools, being very active in the music program which is well known around the state. I accompanied for and sang with the choruses both at South Jr. High and at Brockton High School. BHS puts on an annual musical and I was the first student ever to be the piano player in the orchestra pit, which I did for a record three years. During high school, I also took guitar and voice lessons in addition to piano.
After graduating from BHS in 1999, I went to Berklee College of Music in Boston where I received my B.A. degree in Music Education. I received the student teacher of the year award in 2003 and was an officer of the Berklee chapter of MENC for three years, ending my term as President. I made many, many connections when I was at Berklee- even being handed my degree by Aerosmith's Steven Tyler!
I am licensed to teach K-12 Vocal/Instrumental/General Music. In the summer of 2003, I attended Boston University to receive my Level 1 Orff Certification. That June, I signed my first teaching contract in Scituate, where I taught K-6 and chorus at two schools for two years before coming to teach in Pemrboke. In the summer of 2007, I received my Masters Degree in Music Education at Gordon College after spending three consecuitive summers there for that program.
I am a member of MENC, NEAOSA, BAKE, ACDA, SGMM, and MMEA.
In my free time I take art classes in Cambridge. I also like to read, spend time with family and friends, and my exercise of choice is yoga. My favorite color is purple and my favorite candy is Godiva dark chocolate covered cherries. My favorite TV shows are "The 4400", "Grey's Anatomy", "The Closer" and "House". I love 80's music and 80's movies and I prefer my original 8-bit Nintendo system (from the 80's, of course) to any of the newer video game systems.
I have a younger brother, Jason, who lives in NYC and attends NYU Law School.
It is a pleasure to be working in the Pembroke Public Schools. Working with the children has been a lot of fun and I hope music will become a very important part of their lives.
